By approaching campaigns as art, I set my candidates apart from the pack and give them tools nobody else has to amplify their voices and spread their messages.

For the past 14 years, I've guided more than 100 candidates of all colors, creeds and calibers down the arduous trail to Election Day. Outsiders and underdogs are my specialty. I focus on local-level races –school board trustees, councilmembers, county court judges, etc. etc. –where the candidate calls their own shots. Every campaign I build is a collaboration. About

I was born half Anglo and half Hispanic, with a mixed-breed name that raised eyebrows at the time. A fifth-generation South Texan, I was raised in McAllen, where my father had grown up in poverty and picked watermelons as a child.

I excelled in school, was elected mayor of my fifth-grade class at St. John’s Elementary, graduated in the top 25 percent of McAllen Memorial High School and studied English at the University of Texas at Austin.

I began my career as a copy editor and writer at The Monitor before becoming a regional features and entertainment editor for Freedom Communications. I founded BRANDO Campaigns in 2014, moved to Los Angeles in 2019 and returned to journalism in 2021 as an editor for WEHOville.com and WEHOonline.com.

I am a proud member of the LGBTQ community and devoted cat dad to my beloved Kiki.

A Political Newcomer With Deep Community Roots

Lita Leo had never run for public office, but public service was part of her family story. Her father was a prominent political leader in western Hidalgo County, while her mother was a respected school superintendent. Lita entered the race for Hidalgo County treasurer with strong community roots—but without the campaign experience or political machinery of her opponents.

Turning a Dark Horse Into a Contender

Lita began the race as a dark horse against several well-funded, well-connected candidates. She needed a campaign identity that could quickly establish credibility, make her memorable and give voters a clear reason to trust a first-time candidate. I developed “Count on Lita Leo” as both a direct reference to the treasurer’s office and a casual, approachable promise voters could immediately understand.

Building a Brand Around Trust and Accountability

The idea of “counting” became a flexible messaging system that ran throughout the campaign—count on Lita for accountability, transparency, experience and responsible management of public funds. The central visual was a golden coin featuring a lion, a nod to the name Leo. Metallic textures, gold tones and pennies appeared across the campaign, creating a distinctive visual language tied directly to money, value and the responsibilities of the office.

Carrying the Concept Into Every Detail

The branding extended beyond signs and graphics. I directed Lita to wear shimmering fabrics and metallic tones for her campaign portraits so that even the photography reinforced the gold-and-coin imagery. After she advanced to the runoff, I intensified the use of gold across signage, mail and social media, giving the campaign a richer, more commanding presence. Her eventual victory surprised many observers and demonstrated the power of a disciplined, fully integrated campaign brand.

Supercharging the Brand for Re-election

For her 2026 re-election campaign, we expanded the original concept with stronger incumbency messaging, including “Your County Treasurer” and “The Treasurer You Can Count On.” The campaign’s most striking piece was a 4-by-4-foot highway sign designed as an oversized gold coin, with Lita’s portrait at its center. The strength of the original branding—combined with her record in office—helped transform a once-unlikely candidate into an established public official who won re-election with ease.

A Family Name—And a Race of Her Own

Renee Rodriguez-Betancourt announced her campaign in December 2015, as her family’s political profile was rising fast. Her brother, Ricardo Rodriguez, had begun serving as Hidalgo County’s first new district attorney in decades, and her cousin Sonny Palacios had just entered a congressional race. Those connections brought attention and support, but they also created scrutiny and political complications. Renee needed to honor her family story while making clear that her candidacy—and her coalition—stood on its own.

A Human Launch, Then a Valley-Wide Blitz

The campaign began on New Year’s Day with a casual family video filmed the night before at the watermelon shipping facility where Renee’s father worked. Renee, her husband, children, brothers and parents gathered to pop fireworks—an unpolished introduction rooted in family and place. From there, we followed her across the Upper Rio Grande Valley as she moved from city to city, met elected officials and made her case directly to voters. Almost-daily releases of high-quality photography made the campaign’s pace, intensity and accessibility visible.

Making Pink Look Powerful

The campaign paired gray with soft pink—an unusual combination of judicial restraint and unapologetic femininity. Renee’s pink jacket gave her portrait a fresh, vibrant quality that carried across signs, billboards and social media. The visual system distinguished her immediately in a crowded race without sacrificing the gravity of the office. At her campaign kickoff, Renee delivered a speech we helped shape and blew the roof off the room. The message matched the identity: tough with juveniles, serious about accountability and equally committed to second chances and a new path.

Turning Up the Color—and the Team

Renee finished first against a long-serving incumbent facing corruption allegations, but the race went to a runoff. We shifted the campaign into high gear. Soft pink became brighter and more electric. “TEAM RENEE” introduced a more athletic, rallying visual language, and testimonial videos gave supporters a direct role in making the case. The campaign’s emotional high point was an autobiographical video narrated by Renee as she prepared her children for school. She spoke about her own strict but loving upbringing, rejected the idea that her children were perfect and promised to treat the young people in her courtroom as she would her own.

A Landslide—and a Lasting Mandate

Renee won the runoff in a landslide. The campaign had transformed a familiar political surname into a distinctive personal brand, then built that brand into a coalition voters recognized as her own. The result lasted well beyond election night: over three terms in office, she never drew a challenger. What began as a complicated family story ended as a clear public mandate for Renee Rodriguez-Betancourt.
